Čítankovo (Story time) is an intergenerational volunteering programme within which seniors read to children in nursery schools in Bratislava. Čítankovo brings to seniors and children living in Bratislava an opportunity to know each other by means of stories and enjoy books together.

The aim of the volunteering programme Čítankovo is development of relationship of children towards reading and books and at the same time provision of positive adult role models in this case seniors. At the same time the programme creates an opportunity to improve intergenerational understanding.

How does the volunteering programme work

Story times in nursery school is conducted on a regular basis usually once a week during the rest time based on the particular nursery school programme. An approximate time is between 11.00 am and 12.00 pm. The work of the volunteer should take at least 6 months in order to create a relationship. The Story time reading is conducted also during summer vacation.

The main task of volunteers is to read stories and fairy tales to children topic of which is selected in advance in cooperation with the room teacher. An informal discussion or questions and answers related to the story could be part of the reading. The obligation of the volunteer is to make notes from the meeting with children in a prepared form and participate in supervision meetings.

Conditions to participate in the programme

The programme can be joined by any senior from Bratislava or other neighbouring towns or villages but ideally from the vicinity of the particular nursery school.

Volunteers for the programme are selected on the basis of filled out contact questionnaires and personal interviews. Before participating in the programme, the volunteers are being trained and while in the programme they are provided with professional support, leadership and supervision.

Basic conditions to volunteers are: to be at least 50 years of age, patience, responsibility towards the programme and its obligations, interest into work with preschool children (or younger), will to devote 1 to 3 hours per week.
