Volunteering

Krest'ania v meste

Krest'ania v meste is an organization which provides warm soup, baked goods and hot drinks two to three times per week for homeless people in Bratislava. Once a week they also hand out clothing and provide basic health care and first aid for everyone in need of it. Usually at least fifty people come to receive the food, sometimes there are even up to eighty. Around 200 volunteers work in this organization, some volunteer once a year and others regularly.

This organization is also hosting an event once a year under the motto "I love my city" where their volunteers collect the garbage in the streets and get actively involved in Bratislava to make their home a nicer place. Besides that they occasionally host buffets or meals for different organizations or groups and thereby bring together different parts of the city. If you are interested in taking part in any of these acitvities please contact the coordniator (details below) and she will contact you once there is an opportunity to help.

Volunteer offers:

Chef volunteer: Cooking 30 liters of soup:
In summer two times, in winter three times per week Krest'ania v meste provides thick soup for homeless people in Bratislava. On Tuesday, Thursdays and Saturdays they need someone to cook 30 liters of thick soup. Krest'ania v meste can not provide a kitchen so the volunteers have to use their own ones. The soup should be ready and hot by 6:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, by 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Then the team that will distribute the soup can pick it up at the place of the chef volunteer. This does not have to become a regular volunteering job, but it is important to know that once you have signed up for a specific date the whole team relies on your soup that day, so you will have to cook it.

Distributing food and hot drinks:
While a volunteer or a group of volunteers cook the soup three times a week, one of two other teams cooks 30 liters of hot drinks - this can be done at the place of Krest'ania v meste though. Then the team that picked up the food and the hot-drinks-team meet up and build up the food and the tables for the homeless people. Once that is done they give out food and drinks to everyone in need of it. If you don't speak Slovak you can help as well, but you will have to tell the coordinator that you don't speak Slovak so she can provide another volunteer who can translate important information if needed. Again this doesn't have to become your regular volunteering job, but once you sign up for it you will be there from approximately 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Tuesdays, from 3:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Saturdays and from 6 p.m. until sometimes quite late hours on Thursdays.

Distribution of clothing:
On Thursdays clothing is handed out to the homeless people and you could help there as well. This does not have to be your regular task as well, but it would be great if you could tell the coordinator in advance that you would like to come as a non-Slovak speaking volunteers, so she can provide a volunteer who translates important information if necessary.

First aid help:
On Thursdays a doctor and a well-trained first aid team join the organization to provide a basic health care for everyone who needs it. If you have a good knowledge of first aid or medicine you would be very welcome to join this team. If you talk to the coordinator she can provide a volunteer who can help with the translation as well.

Sorting and organization of clothing:
Krest'ania v meste receives clothing from many different organizations and institutions to give to the homeless people. However, the clothing sometimes is not appropriate for the life on the street, so someone needs to have a look at it and the clothes have to be organized into piles so they can be distributed every Thursday. This volunteering job could be done quite regularly about once a week in the office of Krest'ania v meste.

On the website of the organization there is a time table with the dates that are available to volunteers in the different teams (except the organization of clothing and the first aid team). Volunteers can confirm the dates freely at their convenience and contact the coordinator Lenka Antalíková (antalikova@krestaniavmeste.sk), who will reserve the date for the volunteer.
