How to fall in love with a city
You need :
Great night life (even on week days) : nice cafés, bars, pubs, clubs…
Sun, so the climate has to be clement !
Access to nature and/or parks. Trees and lawns bring color !
Easy way to get out and see some other lanscapes : countryside, mountain, sea,…
Good connections to other cities and interesting places
A good transport system within the city
A certain amount of nice old buildings
A different atmosphere in each neighborhood
Nice people of course !
Cultural life : festivals, concerts, markets, events,…
A relaxed atmosphere
Diverse people in term of skin colour, clothing style,…
Security / safety
Not too many tourists so the cost of life don’t increase crazily but some tourists are necessary for you not to feel too lonely and see that your city is attrative !
Fall in love without even noticing it !
In a more formal way, all of this can be wrapped up in the term “quality of life”. It can be a very subjective way of seeing your life in a particular environment. Several official definitions exist and the criterias differ a bit but Monocle’s Quality of Life Survey standards are safety/crime, international connectivity, climate/sunshine, quality of architecture, public transport, tolerance, environmental issues and access to nature, urban design, business conditions, pro-active policy developments and medical care. The number one city in this survey is Tokyo followed by Vienna and Berlin. Bratislava don’t even make it to the top 25. But as it is also a very subjective concept, they can not include your experience of a city and you can not add the memories you make there !
I’ve already fallen in love with a city. And it was actually love at first sight. I am not sure I LOVE Bratislava, I will only know when I will leave ! But for sure I enjoy living here.
Picture : the city I’ve fallen for : Turin, Italy. Great quality of life too according to my subjectives criterias !
