EVS Diary

Meet an EVS volunteer : Barbora

She lives in Bratislava, but she decided to step out of her comfort zone. For 2 months she lived in Kazanlak with 11 other volunteers from Italy, Spain, Romania and Poland. Everyone shared the same house and learned to live together. “In Bulgaria, I improved my English language skills, learnt to be more tolerant and to live in a community” she told me.

The project in which Barbora was involved in was the organisation of an ecological festival on the banks of the dam lake Koprinka. The area is beautiful, but people don’t take good care of the lake. The goal of the festival was to clean its banks and to raise awareness on environment for local population. During her project, Barobora had to promote the event : she shot short movies about environment, helped design a poster and had presentations in schools.

She took advantage of her EVS to discover a country she did not know before. On week ends, volunteers organized trips all over the country. She visited Sofia and enjoyed the beautiful nature of Bulgaria. This experience helped her grow. She gained more self confidence, because when you live in a community, you need to speak up for yourself.

Now, she is back in Bratislava. She is a teaching assistant in a primary school and keep on volunteering with Greenpeace and Amnesty International. What is left from her EVS in Bulgaria ? Memories, friends, skills and her will to go for a long term EVS !
